Suomussalmi is the northernmost municipality in the Kainuu region and the focal point of the Upper Kainuu area, 110 km north of Kajaani, 130 km south of Kuusamo and about 200 km east of Oulu. Its extensive services and excellent location along highway 5/E63 and on the shore of Lake Kiantajärvi attract visitors from all over.
A lively service centre Highway 5 is the most important route running north and south, and the Via Karelia scenic route branches off from it and runs eastward to Kuhmo and northward to Kuusamo. The large municipality’s villages and services are connected by roads that are kept in good condition. Close to the shopping area in the municipal centre is Jätkänpuisto Park, with its outdoor stage and beach. From it one can see “Lost Cattle” grazing on a small island. The park has a popular disc golf course with nine holes, which can also be played in winter on snowshoes. Across the road the Kiannon Kuohut spa allows visitors to swim year round.
