Municipality of Suomussalmi

The municipality of Suomussalmi was founded on the 12th of October, 1867.

While Suomussalmi was already inhabited 10 000 years ago, the regions of Helsinki and Turku were still under water. According to the current knowledge, the time perspective of the Finnish history is the longest in Suomussalmi.

It was only around the end of 1950’s when the building of the power plant on the river Emäjoki made the achelogists start work in the area: and they started to find treasures.

An important feature in the history of Suomussalmi, in good times as well as in bad, has been the location of the municipality on the border between east and west.

During the Finnish Winter War, the victorious battles of Suomussalmi and Raate affected the process of the whole war, and they also put these locations on the map of the world.

During the time of peace, the nearness of the neighbour has given its flavour to the business, culture as well as to the way of life.

Suomussalmi is located by Road 5 in Kainuu. Neighbours with common borders are the municipalities of Taivalkoski, Puolanka and Hyrynsalmi as well as cities of Kuusamo, Pudasjärvi and Kuhmo, and in the east, Russia. The closest airports lie at 110 km distance in Kajaani and at 200 km in Oulu. The closest railway station for passangers is in Kontiomäki at 85 km distance.

Coat of arms

by Gustaf von Numers.
Four silver slips in a black field, grouped 1+2+1, a golden flame rising from each of them. The slips stand for the splint fires which were used as light in the old days and their number refers to the four basic houses of Suomussalmi which are mentioned in the tax catalogue of 1604.
