Thanks to its geographical location, Suomussalmi has a varied culinary traditions with features, for instance, from Karelian and Lapp kitchens. Local raw materials, such as fish, game, mushrooms and forest berries are used a lot. The baking and especially the bread tradition is long and varied with rye and unleavened bread, pies and fish pies (kalakukko). The real bread speciality is bark bread ! And as a dessert you can have fresh berries, berry cakes or special home made cheese with coffee. In Suomussalmi, you can have your meals not only at restaurants but also at cosy cafés and in farms. An experience in itself is an outdoor meal at lean-to shelters or Lapp tents where the open fire is giving warmth and light and the deep forest is whispering around you.
