MEMORIAL OF THE FIRST CHURCH

Located in the Suomussalmi Church Village, in Kirkkoniemi, the Memorial of the First Church is situated on the stone base of the church that was destroyed in the Winter War, in 1939. On the memorial is a picture of the church and the names of the vicars that have preached there. The Memorial is designed by Martti Manner, a teacher from Suomussalmi. The scale model of the first church is on display in the House Museum.


MEMORIAL OF K. J. STÅHLBERG

 

The Memorial is located in Karhulanvaara, on the yard of the Vocational Institute of Kainuu (Kainuun Ammattiopisto), on the same spot where the old vicarage had been. The first president of Finland, Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg, was born in this vicarage on January 28th 1865.




MEMORIALS FOR THE VICTIMS OF PARTISANS: TUPPURI, HYRY, MALAHVIA AND VIIANKI

 

During the summer of 1943, The Soviet Partisans made several attacks to the boarder villages of Suomussalmi; Tuppuri, Hyry, Malahvia and Viianki. In these attacks died 36 civilians and 3 soldiers. Revealed on the 4th of June 1993 in Hyry village, on the plaque of the memorial is the personal data of the deceased. The Memorial of the Viianki village is the oven of a destroyed house.

Located in the Suomussalmi Church village, in Kirkkoniemi.
The following text is on the memorial (free translation from Finnish):

"Johannes Moilanen
* 2.2.1890 fell in Mouhu 15.4.1918.
Kustaa Kemppainen
* 1.2.1899 fell in Antrea 4.3.1918.

An honor is to die on the path to freedom"

In the Eastern end of the Raate Museum Road, between the road and the new guard building, is located the Memorial stone of the III Army Corps of the Continuation War. The following text is on the plaque of the memorial (free translation from Finnish):

"III Army Corps
Our path to the battles passed through here 1941-44" 


 



STATUE OF AUTHOR ILMARI KIANTOIlmari Kiannon patsas.jpg

Located in Jalonniemi, on the shore of Lake Kiantajärvi.
The bronze cast statue is sculpted by Kain Tapper.
The statue was revealed in August 1974 in the Park of
Kianto, in Suomussalmi Center. To the present location

STATUE OF THE MOURNER

Located in the Suomussalmi Center, on the yard of the
Church of the Holy Cross. The bronze cast statue, Itkijäpatsas.jpg
sculpted by Niina Sailo, represents White Carelian
mourning culture. The statue was revealed on the 27th
of June, 1987 and it was erected by the Väinölä
foundation.

The Memorial for the White Carelian rune chanter
Trohkimaini Soava is located in the Suomussalmi
Center, in the corner of the market place. The 
Memorial symbolizes the egg of a pochard, from
where, according to the Kalevala epic, the world
was created from. The torso embeded in the egg
represents the gold maiden of which Trohkimaini
Soava used to sing about. The statue was revealed
on the 7th of August, 1999 as a joint project of the
Municipality of Suomussalmi and Akonlahti-Seura
association.
