Exhibition of prehistoric Suomussalmi
At the request of the Suomussalmi municipality, the Finish National Board of Antiquities has made available numerous artefacts for the exhibition of prehistory located in the Jalonniemi House. These include items of jewelry, casting moulds, stone axeheads, adzes, flint and slate arrowheads, quartz scrapers, tools from the Iron Age, as well as the entire contents of the cremation grave found at Peranka. Suomussalmi has been inhabited for no less than 10,000 years! One of the oldest known site of human settlement in Finland after the last Ice Age is to be found in the island of Old Kirkkosaari. The northern-most large-scale site of rock paintings in Finland can be found in Hossa. These are known as the Värikallio paintings and a giant 6 metres by 3 metres photograph of the site is on display in the exhibition. The thoughts and beliefs of prehistoric man dating back over millenia are brought into focus with the help of a little imagination; the sacrificial bear-tree, the bear skull and bearskin as well as other cult artefacts all add to the atmosphere.
MULTI-MEDIA PRESENTATIONS
Accompanying the display of prehistoric artefacts is a multimedia computer program.
